The Nissan Leaf has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Leaf and the Prius Plug-In Hybrid have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available front parking sensors.

For better traction, the Leaf has larger standard tires than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid (215/55R18 vs. 195/60R17). The Leaf Platinum+’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid (235/45R19 vs. 195/60R17).

The Leaf’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid SE’s standard 60 series tires. The Leaf Platinum+’s tires have a lower 45 series profile than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid XSE/Nightshade’s 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Leaf has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid SE.

The Leaf has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Leaf is 7.7 inches shorter than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid, making the Leaf easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Nissan Leaf amounts to more than styling. The Leaf has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .26 Cd. That is lower than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid (.27 to .29) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Leaf get better fuel mileage.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Leaf’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The Leaf has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Leaf Platinum+ has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, navigation instruction, infotainment and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Leaf’s standard Intelligent Key allows you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Smart Key System standard on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer a sensor on the trunk or any door except the driver’s, so you’ll have to walk to the driver's door to touch the handle. Smart Key System is not available on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid XSE/Nightshade.

The Leaf has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the XSE/Nightshade.

When the Leaf Platinum+ is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Both the Leaf and the Prius Plug-In Hybrid offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Leaf SV+/Platinum+ has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

The Nissan Leaf has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located for the driver. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Homelink® is only available on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid XSE.
